Some Consumers Feel that Coke Failed at Being Festive

Coca-Cola, the soda distributor that has previously brought us all sorts of holiday cheer in the past, is scrambling to come up with a new design for this year's Christmas cans. In an attempt to keep up with their holiday tradition of putting a special design on their cans, Coca-Cola released an almost all white can with their token polar bears climbing a hill (look left). The issue being that these new regular Coca-Cola cans appear very similar to the Diet Coke cans.

Many consumers have felt the need to e-mail Coke with their concerns and many more shared their gripes on various social networking sites. While the resemblance is clear I find the outcry, regardless of how quiet it is, sad and pathetic. For one the can was designed with cooperation for the World Wildlife Fund to help raise money for their organization. For another thing READ THE DAMN CAN!

Really people. Coca-Cola and their designs have been American icons for almost 100 years. Their cans have sported everything from Polar Bears sharing old-fashioned bottles of soda to a very jolly looking St. Nick enjoying a bottle. To criticize them because a mindless consumer would have to spend more than a split second picking out their product is embarrassing. I'm not even a soda drinker but I am going to go ahead and enjoy a Coke tomorrow as an apology... but only if I can find it in this year's Christmas can.

  1. I was inspired by the same article to post a similar blog entry. I feel that the plan that Coke had was poorly executed and, at best, short-sighted. Of course people would complain about such a violent upheaval of their reality! Of course they would threaten revolution if the cans were not switched!

... Actually I think the whole thing got blown out of proportion, but I know that people are serious about their Coke.

  2. I commented Rik's too. First off, Diet Coke clearly says Diet Coke on the can. Maybe that proves that some need to investigate what they're consuming more often, or it shows just how effective Coke's advertising is. I like the Santa cans, despite they're red. I mentioned on Rik's that Mountain Dew seems to have advertisement and Modern Warfare 3 stuff all over its labels and nobody seems to complain. I didn't know my Mountain Dew was a billboard in itself, but everything is these days. If the can is white, earns money for wildlife, and is festive -- I see no issue. I actually find their tiny, round, ornament shaped bottles cute, too. Were those white or red? No complaints yet. Like I said on Rik's, stock up on the imagination!

  3. I think it is really funny that you point out that these customers complaining don't understand why coke has chosen this design for this years x-mas. The people think it is a lack of effort when really a simple design sometimes says the most. They are clearly effected by it so I guess coke is doing their job.

  4. I think the real travesty here is not that people confuse the cans for diet coke, or that people are even upset at all. The real issue is that people are buying cans of coke at Christmas, it is time for the old fashion glass bottle! There is nothing more Christmas than gulping down a nice glass bottle of Coke. Ask Santa, he knows what I'm talking about. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TMwBFK2qHI
